Music
Knowledge Organisers:
Knowledge Organisers provide the core knowledge from our curriculum that the students are required to know to meet curriculum expectations. They are an excellent resource to use for revision in preparation for assessments or examinations.
The KS4 Subject Specific Knowledge Organisers and the link to the KS3 termly booklet can be found in the "In this section" tab at the top right hand side of this page.
Curriculum Information:
Our department’s slogan and vision is “Music For all” and this is a vision we are committed to. We believe all learners have a right to experience and interact with music and therefore endeavor to create opportunities that are accessible, meritocratic and meaningful.
We focus on the three main pathways of musical engagement: listening, performing and composition. These are delivered in compelling and sequenced lessons built around the nine elements of music using the concept of a spiral curriculum revesting information through out their learning journey.
Using these shared elements, learners create a map of understanding that encompasses all music regardless of genre or culture. Learners then apply this to their own experiences to listen, learn and compose to music that inspires them.
We are committed to singing at all stages of the curriculum and have found this to be the most powerful driver of pupil engagement and progress.
Music is compulsory for Years 7, 8 and 9 and is taught in mixed ability groups. It is an option for KS4 pupils to take Eduqas Music GCSE which is an excellent qualification that engenders a love and understanding of music.
At KS5 students can study A level music and AQA, A level Music Technology with Edexel. We also have the opportunity to complete coursework at Real World Studios.
Extracurricular:
We are proud to offer a wide range of Extracurricular clubs and opportunities. These include Key stage three music club, flute and clarinet group, the school choir and our, by invitation only, concert band. Students are also able to make use of our classrooms and practice rooms at lunch time to rehearse in their own groups if they wish.
Performance opportunities:
We hold several major performance opportunities through the year. These are the winter and summer concerts, the school show. These performances are supplemented by events run as part of the key stage 5 course and pastoral assemblies.
Peripatetic lessons:
Students can learn to play an instrument with one of our many excellent peripatetic teachers. Lessons are available for piano, keyboard, voice, flute, guitar, drums, strings and brass.
There is a subsidy available from the council to assist with the cost of lessons for pupil premium and SEN students and instruments are available to hire from Wiltshire Council.
